On January 13, former Nimba County District 4 Representative, Cllr. Garrison Yealue claimed that PYJ University was not allotted any funding in Liberia’s 2026 National Draft Budget.

Cllr. Yealue made this claim during an appearance on Freedom FM. He argued that the late Senator Prince Y. Johnson, founder of PYJ University, supported the ruling Unity Party in Nimba County after breaking ranks with the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) because, according to him, the former ruling party had failed to deliver development to the county.

According to Cllr. Yealue, the Legislature had promised to include funding for PYJ University through additional budgetary allocations.

The PYJ University, named in honor of its founder – the late Nimba County Senator, is located in Ganta City, Nimba County. The institution was established in 2014, dedicated in March 2022, and commenced academic activities in September of that year.

In December 2022, the Liberian Senate passed an Act to turn the university into a public higher learning institution. These media reports can be found here and here. However, the Bill was never signed into law by the President.

Claim

Said Cllr. Yealue: “The man who left all his busy schedule and said CDC was not doing enough for him, he was going to lead the campaign, the PYJ, the only thing that old man fought for and left, it was the PYJ Polytechnic, check the budget, Zero.”
