On January 1, Amos Tweh, the Managing Director of the Liberia Petroleum Refining Company (LPRC), claimed [at the 1:50:20 time stamp] on OK FM that Liberia is one of the countries with the lowest petroleum prices in Africa.
Tweh made this claim while outlining his achievements at the LPRC since assuming the role of Managing Director on January 30, 2024.
The average price of gasoline around the world is US$1.23 per liter. However, there is a substantial difference in these prices among countries.

Mr. Tweh exact words were: “If you check across other African countries, Liberia has one of the lowest pump prices of petroleum products.”

According to GlobalPetrolPrices, a website that publishes wide-ranging, reliable, and up-to-date information on retail energy prices around the world including motor fuel prices, electricity prices, and natural gas prices, Liberia is ranked 9th among 10 African countries with the lowest pump prices of gasoline, and 8th among 10 African countries that have the lowest pump prices of Diesel. These rankings date back to December 30, 2024.
In addition, Legit.ng, a Nigerian news website, published an article on the petroleum industry in Africa in October 2024, with the caption “New Ranking for Nigeria in List of 10 African Countries With Lowest Fuel Prices”. In this article, Liberia was ranked 9th in Africa from the breakdown of 10 countries with the cheapest petrol prices and 33 in the world – selling a liter of gasoline for US$0.89 (89 US cents). The article references data from the GlobalPetrolPrices.
Meanwhile, Business Insider Africa, a pan-African business news website, listed the top 10 countries in Africa with the lowest petroleum prices in September in an advertisement on its website. According to the announcement, Liberia was ranked 9th among the top 10 countries on the continent with the lowest prices of petroleum products, selling for $US0.89 per liter. The article also referenced data from the Global Petrol Prices.
Currently, the pump price of gasoline in Liberia is US$3.91 per gallon or approximately US$0.97 (97 US cents per liter).
