Source of photo: Stratcon website

Summary: In a press conference, following the signing of an MoU with the Liberia Petroleum and Refinery Company (LPRC) to import petroleum products to Liberia, the CEO of Stratcon claims that his company has always been a part of the top ten importers to Ghana. We checked this claim and found it to be misleading.

On May 8, the management of the Liberia Petroleum and Refinery Company entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Stratcon Energy and Trading Limited “for the supply of petroleum products on the Liberian market.

LPRC Managing Director Amos Tweh said the MOU will “increase energy security and the strategic reserves of the LPRC to deal with future shortages in the market”.

Responding to a question by a journalist about the reputation of Stratcon in the petroleum industry in Ghana, Mr. Harry Cambell, the firm’s CEO, at exact 3:52 of the 5:56 minute-long recording on FrontPage Africa claimed that the company is among the top five importers of petroleum products in Ghana.

His exactly words were: “Currently in Ghana, we always remain a top five importers of products into the country”.

To fact-check this claim, we first review the website of Stratcon Energy and Trading Limited.

At the top of its website, the company states that it is “among the top importers of petroleum in Ghana as of 2024”, but at the bottom of the homepage, there is a table from the Ghana Petroleum Industry Report 2019.

The table shows the top 10 importers of petroleum in Ghana as of 2019 with Stratcon at spot number 8 on the table.

Before 2019, Stratcon was at spot number 26 on a list of 30 importers of petroleum products in Ghana, according to the Ghana Petroleum Industry Report 2018, page 130.

We also reviewed the latest Ghana Petroleum Industry Report released in 2021 which shows that Stratcon is not among the top ten importers of petroleum products in Ghana as claimed by the CEO of the company.

From top to bottom, the list of the top 10 importers of petroleum products in Ghana as of 2021 seen on page 173  of the report are: GO Energy, JUWEL, BLUE OCEAN, FUELTRADE, DOMINION, MARANATHA, CHASE, WOODFIELDS, and VIHAMA.

Conclusion

Based on these facts, we conclude that the claim made by the CEO of Stratcon Energy and Trading that the company is “always among the top five importers of petroleum products in Ghana” is misleading.

A review of Ghana’s petroleum industry report shows that in 2019 Stratcon was at spot 8 in the top 10 list of importers. A review of the latest Industry report from 2020-2021 shows that Stratcon falls nowhere among the top 10 importers.
