Fact Check: Has the Asset Recovery Team Indicted Any Current Government Official?

In Summary:
  • Asset Recovery Public Relations Officer, Joseph Daniels, claimed that the institution has indicted both past and current government officials. As evidence, he cited Ms. Josephine Greaves
  • A review of indictment records and media reports shows that Ms. Greaves was serving in government at the time and was indeed indicted by AREPT

On June 8, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Asset Recovery and Property Retrieval Task Force (AREPT), Joseph Daniels, claimed on the OK Morning Rush that the anti-graft institution has “indicted both former and current government officials”.

Daniels was responding to a caller who alleged that AREPT was only targeting officials from the previous administration and had not indicted any serving government officials since its establishment.

In response, Daniels cited Ms. Josephine Greaves, who he claimed served as Assistant Minister for Research, Policy, and Planning at the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, as an example of a current government official who had been indicted by AREPT.

The Claim

Joseph Daniels stated: “The Assistant Minister for Research, Policy and Planning at the Ministry of Gender… her name is Josephine Greaves. So she was indicted by the Task Force and was suspended by the President.”

Rating Justifications

To fact-check the claim, we reviewed official government records and media reports.

Our findings show that President Joseph Nyuma Boakai appointed Ms. Josephine Greaves as Assistant Minister for Research, Policy, and Planning at the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection on October 27, 2025.

Ms. Greaves was appointed by Pres. Boakai in 2025, and the information was published on the official page of the Executive Mansion

We then reviewed records relating to indictments announced by AREPT.

Our review found that Ms. Greaves was among seven past and current government officials indicted by the Grand Jury in connection with the alleged diversion of approximately US$1.82 million from the Rural Women’s Fund. Reports indicate that the indictment was announced on April 9, 2026.

Ms. Greaves was indicted in 2026 following an investigation by AREPT

Following the indictment, President Boakai suspended Ms. Greaves from her position on April 24, 2026, pending the outcome of court proceedings.

The records, therefore, confirm that Ms. Greaves was a serving government official at the time of her indictment.

Conclusion

Based on our review of the indictment records and related reports, we conclude that the claim made by AREPT Public Relations Officer Joseph Daniels, that the anti-graft institution has indicted both former and current government officials, is CORRECT.

Evidence shows that Ms. Josephine Greaves, who was serving as Assistant Minister for Research, Policy and Planning at the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, was among seven past and current government officials indicted by the Grand Jury in connection with the alleged diversion of approximately US$1.82 million from the Rural Women’s Fund.

Although she was subsequently suspended by President Joseph Boakai pending court proceedings, she was a serving government official at the time of her indictment.
