Monrovia — There have been posts on Facebook about the released of the 2023 WASSCE results, raising concerns from the public about how factual the information is.
The Claim
A post from a Facebook page named “The University of Liberia diary” posted on August 11,2023 that “WAEC Liberia has released the official 2023 WASSCE results”. Directing the readers to go and check the results.
In the post contained a purported breakdown of the number of students who passed and failed the regional exams.
Other Facebook groups Around Nimba and University of Liberia Gees amongst others, also posted the same claim.
The Evidence
To verify this claim, we checked the West African Examinations Council official website, and we didn’t see any publication of WASSCE results.
We then reached out to Mr. Prince Nagbe, the Public Affairs Officer at WAEC, through a WhatsApp message and he informed us that the results are not yet out. He assured that WAEC will notify the public when the official results are out.
Also, on August 16, 2033 Mr. Latim Dathong ll, Deputy Minister of Education, wrote on Facebook that the Ministry has received a “Truly outstanding” WASSCE results and will on Monday, August 21 hold a press conference about the result.
LVL Fact Checking Desk also asked several candidates who recently sat the exams to check their results on the WAEC website but they did not see their results on the portal.
Conclude
Based on the research conducted, we conclude that claims that WAEC Liberia has published the official WASSCE results are false and the breakdowns of results as being shared by Facebook users is misleading.
