Grand Gedeh County: Treatment Center Underway
Authorities in Grand Gedeh County have agreed to renovate an existing facility in Zai Town to be used as the county’s COVID-19 treatment center.
Zia Town is about 10 kilometres from the county’s capital Zwedru and falls within the Cavalla Health District of the county.
The proposed treatment center is adjacent the Zai Town clinic. When completed, it will be used to isolate and treat any COVID-19 infected person in the county.
Zebedee Agri Bao, the county’s Risk Communication lead, said the building was provided by the community without any cost but it will require funding to do renovation.
Meanwhile, the lack of adequate resources to respond to the outbreak is a concern for the county.
Mr. Bao said his team is “finding it difficult to reach out to far-away communities to carry out awareness abut the pandemic” due to limited logistical support.
The county has not recorded any confirmed COVID-19 case so far.
Maryland County: JJ Dossen Gets Donation
The Speaker of the House of Representatives has donated two drums of fuel to the J.J Dossen Hospital – the main referral health facility in the county.
Robert Weah, Constituent Coordinator of Speaker Bhofal Chambers, said the donation was to help keep the hospital powered and fuel vehicles as the health facility responds to the pandemic.
“Speaker Chamber also thinks if we should have to make Liberia free from this coronavirus crisis, health authorities need to help buttress Government’s efforts in providing services at the health facilities across the country,” Weah said.
Receiving the fuel, Dr. Methodist George, the County Health Officer, thanked the Speaker terming the gesture as timely, while calling on others to emulate the Mary Land County lawmaker’s goodwill to the health sector.
Gbarpolu County: Supporting Rural Schools
Ahead of the reopening of schools in Liberia, a prominent son of Gbarpolu has donated 86 pieces of benches at the value of L$180,000.00 to the Henry Town Public School in Korninga Chiefdom, Bopolu District.
“A couple of months ago I visited this campus, I saw the children sitting on blocks and some were standing writing. There were no benches,” said Paul Kennedy. “For children to learn we need to get somewhere good for them to sit.”
“So, I worked with the town people, and today I am pleased to present these benches for our children to be sitting on to learn.”
Barsee Sumo, a staff in the district commissioner’s office, thanked Mr. Kennedy and urged students to make good use of the benches.
Paramount Chief Karfia Manjoe welcomed the donation and asked for continued development projects in the chiefdom.
Grand Bassa County: COVID-19 Task Force Set
The county’s COVID-19 Task Force was set up and commissioned on Friday, June 5 in Buchanan. It was commissioned by the chairman of county legislative caucus, Rep. Thomas Goshua, who assured more support through the legislative caucus.
The Task force comprises of representatives of civil society organizations, the media, the county health team, concession companies as well as the county administration.
It now has the mandate of rolling back the coronavirus pandemic in the county. Grand Bassa County currently has three confirmed cases.
Bong County: Another Confirmed Case
Bong County has recorded its second confirmed case of COVID-19 barely four days after reporting its first case on June 4.
The patient, according to Bong County Health Officer Dr. Adolphus Yeiah, is a 65-year-old man who died at the Phebe Hospital on June 7.
The patient had gone at the hospital to seek treatment, but later died in the hospital. His specimen was immediately taken to Monrovia and was tested positive for COVID-19.
Dr. Yeiah said the 65-year-old man is not connected to the first patient, who also died from the virus.
“Doctors at the hospital were suspicious and they immediately informed us that there was a man at the hospital that they were not satisfied with and we immediately went there,” he said. “So, he is not related to our first case at all.”
He then called on residents of the county to observe all health protocols to limit the spread of the virus in the county.
Lofa County: Another Case
The fourth confirmed case of COVID-19 has been recorded in the county. The case is one of the contacts associated with the index case in Foya. The patient was under quarantine when he was tested positive for the virus.
Also, 27 persons who had been in the Precautionary Observation Centers (POCs) have been released to their respective families. Seven persons were discharged from the POC in Voinjama while 20 from the POC in Foya. Those released came in closed contact with the first confirmed case in the county.
Meanwhile, the county’s COVID-19 task force has received 120 bags of rice and other assorted sanitary materials from Labor Minister Moses Kollie. The support is to help buttress the county’s fight against the pandemic.
