Gbarbga, Bong County – The Youth Council of the Young Men Christian Association in Gbarnga has embarked on a major cleaning-up campaign of the city. Peter Dolo, Bong County YMCA youth association president, said the campaign is part of a series of activities leading to a three-day non-violence election awareness.

Dolo said it is important for youth in the county to join other stakeholders in order to provide awareness about non-violent elections and help clean the city of filth.
“We are not only the future leaders of this county; we are also partners in the development of every sector of this county”, Dolo said. “Since we are young and most of our friends are also young, we think they will listen to us when we talk to them to be peaceful during the coming elections”.
He said the cleaning exercise is targeting public facilities in Gbarnga and its surrounding communities, while the pending youth camp will assemble 300 young people from across the county in Gbarnga from September 1-3, 2017.
During the Youth Camp, there will be various speakers lecturing about the role of the youth in preventing elections violence, volunteerism, community development and youth capacity building among others.
The YMCA local official wants interested youth of the county to take advantage of the upcoming program and help spread the message of peace during the elections.
In a related development, the Liberia Female Law Enforcement Association has launched a civic voters education campaign in Bong County.
The initiative, according to the group’s coordinator, is being supported by Kvinna Till Kvinna-a nongovernmental organization.
Atty. Asatu Kenneh said the campaign is meant to increase the participation of women in political and peace-building activities in Liberia.
She said the organization’s focus is to promote and support female candidates and ensure they eventually emerge as winners in the ensuing presidential and representative elections.
Atty. Kenneh noted that it is cardinal for more women’s presence in the national legislature to enhance effectiveness in the country’s governance.
