Zwedru – The Seventh Judicial Circuit Court in Grand Gedeh County has sentenced a 22-year old man to nine years imprisonment.
Mark P. Worzon will serve time at the National Palace of Correction (NPC) outside of Zwedru, for killing his 17-year old former girlfriend identified as Luckygirl Koon.
Koon was killed in the Bentley gold mining camp, which is 25 kilometers away from Zwedru.
According to the assigned Judge at the Seventh Judicial Circuit Court in Zwedru Karboi K. Nuta, the trial jury unanimously brought down a guilty verdict against defendant Worzon for the crime of murder but it was later changed to manslaughter after he pleaded guilty to the crime.
In January, the Liberia National Police charged and sent to court defendant Worzon for murder on Section 14.1 of the new panel code of the Republic of Liberia.
Before the judge read his sentence, Worzon pleaded with the court for forgiveness and that he was influenced by the use of alcohol and drugs.
“That night, I smoked drugs and at the same time was drunk with alcohol, so when I entered the room Luckygirl, told me to go and bath so I refused, through that confusion broke out between she and I. From that point, we started fighting and I choked her and that’s how she died in my hand that what caused me to escape the scene, thinking that I could save myself,” the police charge sheet quoted him as saying.
According to the ruling, convicted Worzon will be placed on parole after three years based on good prison records from the palace of correction authority.
