- Sinoe County Senator Cryton Duncan claims during a radio interview that Liberia contributed 7.8 tons of gold to the world market in 2024.
- We fact-checked his claim by reviewing the 2025 Liberia Financial Statistics (LFS) published by the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) and the 2024 global mine production report published by the World Gold Council.
- Our research found the claim made by the Senator to be incorrect.
On June 6, Sinoe County Senator Crayton Duncan claimed during a live interview on Kool FM/TV that Liberia contributed 7.8 tons of gold to the world market in 2024.
The Sinoe County Senator was arguing that the current policies favor foreign investors over Liberians in exploring and exporting the country’s natural resources, leaving little benefit for ordinary citizens.
The Claim
Sen. Duncan’s exact statement was: “If you look at the chart on the World Market on those that distributed wealth as it relates to gold… Liberia contributed 7.8 tons of gold last year [2024].”
Rating Justification
To fact-check whether Liberia contributed 7.8 tons of gold to the world market in 2024, we conducted an online search.
We found and reviewed the 2025 Liberia Financial Statistics (LFS), published by the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL). The LFS is a quarterly and annual publication detailing Liberia’s banking sector, monetary aggregates, foreign exchange activity, and financial markets. The LFS offers essential data and analysis for policymakers and researchers.
A careful review of the 2025 LFS shows that from January to December 2024, Liberia exported a total of 442,627.75 ounces of gold, equivalent to approximately 13.77 tons.

Further online research found a June 2024 global mine production report published by the World Gold Council (WGC). WGC ia a market development organization that promotes gold demand, supports the gold industry, and provides authoritative research and market intelligence.
According to the WGC’s 2024 report, Liberia exported 19.9 tons of gold in 2024, not 7.8 tons as claimed by Senator Duncan.

Conclusion
Based on these findings, we conclude that the claim made by Sinoe County Senator Cryton Duncan that Liberia contributed 7.8 tons of gold to the world market in 2024 is incorrect.
While it is true that Liberia contributes gold to the world market, the figure cited by the Senator does not reflect the actual export volume. Reports from both the CBL (2025 Liberia Financial Statistics) and the WGC show that Liberia exported approximately 13.77 tons and 19.9 tons of gold, respectively, in 2024. The two figures do not match but are far higher than the one mentioned by Senator Duncan.
