On November 22, a facebook user identified as Henry Saah Ndorbor, posted in Fries FM – a popular Facebook group, claiming that the University of Liberia will no longer offer free tuition beginning next semester.
The Claim
The post reads: “Starting next semester the University of Liberia will no offer free tuition. The new cost will be $1,000 LD per credit hour.” This post has so far received 59 reactions and 68 comments and it is become popular in the group.
Rating Justification
To fact check this claim, we first reviewed of the official facebook page of the University of Liberia but did not find any statement or information in relation to the claim.
We then contacted the Vice President for University Relations at the University of Liberia, Cllr. Norris Tweah via WhatsApp who said he had “no idea about the claim”.
To further verify the claim, we contacted the President of the University of Liberia, Rev. Dr. Julius Sawolo Nelson by phone.
In his response, Dr. Nelson said the claim is a “rumor” and that the University has not received any information about canceling the free tuition policy.
Conclusion
Based on the evidence we have gathered, we, therefore conclude that the claim that the UL has planned to cancel the tuition free policy and charge L$1,000 per credit is misleading.
