Misleading: WAEC-Liberia Has Not Released 2024 WASSCE Results

Summary: Claims on Facebook suggest that the 2024 WASSCE results have been released by the West African Examination Council Liberia office with 46,448 out of 49,383 students successfully passing the exams which amounts to a 94.06% passing rate. We have fact-checked this claim and found it to be misleading.

On August 13, Nagbe posted on his Facebook page and claimed that WAEC Liberia has released the 2024 WASSCE results. In his post, he detailed the results for each subject, claiming that out of 49,383 students who sat the exams, 46,448 passed – amounting to a 94.06% passing rate.

This post has been shared and reposted by several Facebook users.

Claim

The post reads: “Liberia WASSCE RESULTS are out.. Out of the 49,383 students who sat the 2024 WASSCE, 46, 448 made a successful pass amounting to a 94.06% passing rate. Liberians did well this turn”.

Rating Justification

To verify this claim,  we conducted several searches of statements and releases about the 2024 WASSCE results.

First, we reviewed the official Facebook page of WAEC-Liberia and found no such announcement regarding the 2024 WASSCE results. The most recent post from WAEC-Liberia dated August 13, 2024, informs the public that WAEC results from 1998 to the present are now back online but WAEC did not provide any statistics or confirm the release of the 2024 results.

To further authenticate the claim, we contacted Mr. Dale Gbotoe, head of WAEC-Liberia, via WhatsApp. Mr. Gbotoe confirmed that the 2024 results have not been released.

Mr. Gbotoe termed the claim as “fake” and stated that the results are expected to be out around the 22nd or 23rd of August.

Wrote Mr. Gbotoe: “FAKE NEWS! How I wish you had the time to stop over at the office and see the level of work being done. I don’t see the results being released no sooner than the 22nd or 23rd of this month.”

Conclusion

Based on the research conducted, we therefore conclude that the claim made by Nagbeon Facebook about the 2024 WASSCE result is misleading.
