Summary: The Managing Director Sekou Hussein Dukuly has claimed that the National Port Authority of Liberia contributes 95% of Liberia’s GDP. Our search found no evidence to support his claim while the CBL report shows that the “service” contributed the most to the country’s GDP in 2023, not the NPA.
National Port Authority (NPA) Managing Director Sekou H. Dukuly, in an ELBC Interview on June 26 claimed that the National Port Authority contributes 95% of Liberia’s GDP. Mr. Dukuly made the claim to highlight the NPA’s contributions to the Liberian economy.
The Claim
His exact words were: “95% of our country’s GDP comes through the Free Port of Monrovia, the Port of Buchanan….”
Rating Justification
To verify this claim, we first contacted him via WhatsApp about the source of his claim but he did not respond to our inquiry up to the time of the production of this report.
We then began researching credible sources for information relating to the contribution of the NPA to Liberia’s Gross Domestic Product.
We reviewed the 2023 Annual Report of the Central Bank of Liberia – which includes data of the country’s economy – and found a list of various sectors that contributed to Liberia’s GDP in 2023.
On page 35 of the report, the NPA is not listed as one of the sectors that contributed to the country’s GDP.
The data shows that Services contributed 38.4%, Manufacturing 5.9%, Mining & Panning 18.7%, Forestry 8.3% and Agriculture & Fisheries 28.6 respectively.
Conclusion
Based on our findings, we conclude that the claim made by the NPA Managing Director that the entity contributes 95% of Liberia’s GDP is without evidence.
The CBL report of the economy and sectors that contribute to the economy shows that “service” is the highest contributor to Liberia’s GDP and it accounted for 38% of the country’s GDP in 2023.
