Recount Keeps Geevon Smith Lead in River Cess County Senate Race

River Cess County – The National Election Commission has  conducted recount in River Cess County with results showing that independent candidate Wellington Geevon Smith wining his close contender  Steve Tequah by 54 votes margin.

The electoral body’s local office in the county on January 16 conducted a recount of seven of the 111 centers in the county following a complaint filed by independent candidate Tequah, claiming fraud in seven of the polling places.

The recount process, which was presided over by Maryland County’s Election Magistrate, puts Smith in a narrow lead.


Smith is ahead of his main rival but there are reports that there have been another complaint filed to NEC

Smith obtained 3,302 votes constituting 23.3% while Tequah accumulated 3,248 votes which constitutes 22.0% of the total votes cast.

The recount was the result of complaint filed by rival independent candidate Steve Tequah

Smith served as Superintendent of River Cess County during the administration of former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf for four years before resigning in 2014 to contest in a special senatorial election that he would later lose to now Senator Francis Paye.
