A Facebook user identified as Monkonjay Nagbe SunshineChea on April 30 posted a photograph in The Costa Show and claimed that the bodyguard of Col. Abraham Kromah, the head of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) had cut off the lady’s hand.
The image is a woman who appears to be pregnant lying down helplessly with her hand apparently decapitated, and the second image shows a man holding a cutlass and a chopped human hand.
Claim:
The post reads: “God help Liberia DEA Boss AB bodyguard cut this Lady’s hand off”.
Rating Justification
To fact-check this claim, we conducted a reverse image search of the images shared on Facebook.
First, we found that the images were published by various Nigerian blogs and online magazines on April 30, 2024.
According to reports from CEOAfrica, Igbo Times Magazine, and Talk of Naija, a man reportedly chopped off his wife’s hand over an issue relating to some N3000. The incident, according to news reports, happened in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria.
According to one of the reports: “A Jos resident, Bashir M Usman, who disclosed this in a Facebook post on Monday, April 29, 2024, said the man severed her hand from the wrist because she allegedly took N3000 out of his N20,000 savings”.
Vanguard, a reputable Nigerian news outlet, reported that the perpetrator was a “Police Inspector whose name is yet to be ascertained”.
Conclusion
Based on the online research and reverse image search conducted to authenticate the photo, we conclude that the claim linking the cutting off of a lady’s hand to the bodyguard of the LDEA Director is misleading.
