Bong County – In his 5th State of the Nation Address to the Legislature on January 24, 2022, President George Weah stated that his administartion has completed “100 Housing Units Construction Project in Bong County”. But did the Liberian leader get his facts right about the project in the central Liberian county?
On December 1, 2020, President Weah travelled to Bong County to break ground for 100 units of Pro-Poor homes, describing the project as an “actualization of the promise made in 2017 to the Liberian people” when he was contesting for the Presidency.
Local Voices Liberia Fact Checking Desk embarked on a fact check trip to verify the President’s claim about the 100 housing units in Bong County as stated in his report to the Legislature, and we found it to be incorrect.
A fact-finding tour of the two project sites in Marshansue Town, Salala District and Nahn Village, Jorquelleh District respectively discovered only 10 housing units are fully completed. These 10 houses are in Marshansue town.
A further check in Nahn village found another 10 units currently under construction. However, work has stopped due to the unavailability of building materials on the site, according to the contractor, Jimmy Fayiah.
Fayiah, a sub-contractor of BMC Group – the company building the units, told LVL Fact Checker that 40 more homes will be built in four different communities in Bong County – 10 in each of the towns.
Conclusion
Based on the primary research conducted by LVL Fact Checker which vividly showed that 10 homes have been completed in Marshansue Town while 10 more are under-construction in Nahn village, we concluded that the statement made by President George Weah in his 5th State of the Nation Address that 100 Pro-Poor Housing Units have been completed in Bong County is incorrect.
