Gender Minister is Incorrect: Women Do Not Constitute More than Half of Liberia’s Population

In Summary: Liberia’s Minister of Gender Children and Social Protection Gbeme Horace Kollie claimed that women constitute “more than half” of the country’s population, but we have verified the claim and found it to be incorrect.

On July 24, Minister of Gender Children, and Social Protection Madam Gbeme Horace Kollie claimed that women constitute over 50% of Liberia’s population.

The Gender Minister made the claim in an ELBC news report, highlighting the importance of women’s inclusion in development programs at the Women of Liberia town hall meeting with President Joseph Boakai.

Claim

Said Minister Kollie: “Women constitute more than half of the country’s population”.

Rating Justification

To fact-check this claim, we reviewed the 2022 Liberia Population and Housing Census final report released by the Liberia Statistics and Geo-Information Services (LISGIS).

On page 16 of the report, the key findings of the census show that women constitute 49.6% of Liberia’s total population.

However, the report also shows that men constitute 50.4%, more than half of the total population.

Conclusion

Based on this fact we conclude that the claim by the Minister of Gender Children and Social Protection madam Gbeme Horace Kollie that women constitute more than half of Liberia’s population is incorrect.

The 2022 final census report shows that women constitute 49.6% of the total population which is not more than half of the country’s population.
