Misleading: UL Has Not Increased Tuition to US$7.00

Summary: A widespread claim has been making rounds on social media that the University of Liberia has increased tuition to US$7. A review of the claim by our Fact Checking Desk proved that it is false.

Social Media, mainly Facebook got flooded on January 31 with a claims that authorities of the State-Run University of Liberia-UL have increased the tuition of the university to US$7.00 per credit.

One of those claiming that the UL has increased its tuition is Byron Brown Jr., known by his Facebook name Byron Byron.

The Claim

He posted this to Facebook: “7 dollars Per Credit Hour at UL is a good move by the rescue mission. If education is expensive, CDCIANS should try ignorance. No Time!!”

Rating Justification

To fact check this claim, we first reviewed the official Facebook Page and website of the University of Liberia but did not find any statement or information relating to the claim.

We also contacted the Vice President for University Relations at the University of Liberia, Cllr. Norris Tweah via WhatsApp but could not get his response up to the publication of this report.

Our Fact Checking Desk later obtained a release from the University through the office of the Vice President for UL Relations, Cllr. Norris L. Tweah.

In the release, the University clarified that “this information is false as there is no decision reached by the UL Administration to charge our students US$7.00 per credit hour for academic programs at the University.”

Conclusion

Based on these facts, we therefore conclude that the claim about the University of Liberia increasing tuition to $7.00 is misleading.

The UL says there is no decision reached by its administration to charge students US$7.00 per credit hour for academic programs at the University.
