-
NPA Managing Director Sekou Dukuly recently claimed that the Port of Greenville is the deepest water port in Liberia.
-
However, we reviewed data from the NPA to verify this claim, and it shows that the Port of Greenville has a depth of only 6 meters, while the Port of Buchanan reaches 10.5 meters and the Freeport of Monrovia extends up to 14.5 meters.
-
Therefore, Dukuly’s claim was found to be incorrect, as the Freeport of Monrovia is both the largest and deepest seaport in Liberia.
Sekou Hussein Dukuly, Managing Director of the National Port Authority (NPA), has claimed that the Port of Greenville in Sinoe County is the deepest water port in Liberia.
Mr. Dukuly made this claim on September 15, during an interview with ELBC, where he discussed the strategic importance of the country’s seaports.
Liberia has four seaports that operate under the NPA System, including the Freeport of Monrovia, the Port of Buchanan, the Port of Greenville, and the Port of Harper.
The Claim
His exact words are: “The Port of Greenville is the deepest waterport in Liberia.”
Rating Justification
To verify this claim, we reviewed the NPA’s website and found the listed depths of Liberia’s four seaports.
In port terminology, “depth” refers to how deep the water is at the berth — the area where ships dock to load and unload cargo.
According to the NPA, the Port of Greenville has a harbor, protected by a 400m long breakwater and, on its inner side, by two quays. There are two berthing facilities, 70m and 180m respectively, with a current depth of 6m below the chart datum.

In comparison, the Port of Harper in Maryland County has a depth of 5.5 meters, while the Port of Buchanan, the second largest port, has a harbor that is protected by two breakwaters, 1,890m and 590m long. Inside the basin, a 225-meter-long ore loading quay is located adjacent to the commercial loading quay, providing a water depth of 10.5m below the chart datum.
The Freeport of Monrovia, which is the largest in the country, has the greatest depth, reaching up to 14.5 meters.
Conclusion
Based on these findings, we conclude that the claim made by NPA Managing Director Sekou Dukuly, that the Port of Greenville in Sinoe County is the deepest water port in Liberia, is incorrect.
The Freeport of Monrovia remains both the largest and deepest water port in the country, followed by the Port of Buchanan.
